Autism - Behavioral Consulting

How AIS Can Help with Autism/Behavioral Concerns?
Allied Instructional Services offers consulting services for staff and students with Autism/Behavioral concerns. The services are available to individual counties or regional programs. Our goal is to provide hands on training with teams of teachers and staff, who work with students with autism, in effective behavior management and teaching strategies. The goal is for teachers and staff to have the techniques that are readily deployed, easily retrieved, and highly flexible.

Definition

According to the Virginia Regulations Governing Special Education

“Autism” means a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction, generally evident before age three, that adversely affects a child’s educational performance. Other characteristics often associated with autism are engagement in repetitive activities and stereotyped movements, resistance to environmental change or change in daily routines, and unusual responses to sensory experiences.

Autism does not apply if a child’s educational performance is adversely affected primarily because the child has an emotional disturbance. A child who manifests the characteristics of autism after age three could be identified as having autism if the criteria in this definition are satisfied. (34 CFR 300.8(c)(1))

 Accessing Our Services

The services we offer are consulting services in the areas of room configuration, programming, Positive Behavioral Supports, teaching strategies and training for staff (i.e. FBA, BIP, Data collection etc).

Each step of the consultative service is in accordance with the Special Education Director’s goal. The steps are as followed: Through discovery we determine the goal of the county, the needs of the students, teachers, and staff.

  • Through evaluation we preform observations, teacher and staff interviews, teacher and staff self-reporting of strengths and weaknesses.
  • After data collection we propose a plan to meet the goal of the county with short term benchmarks, progress denotation and an evaluation method.
  • The final step is the execution of the plan with SUCCESS for all.
